SUMMARY:Reading Group: What To Do About The Courts
DESCRIPTION:Every day the judiciary plays an increasingly dominant role in shaping our political lives–from recent elimination of reproductive rights and affirmative action\, to the steady erosion of voting rights and the unshackling of gerrymandering\, to the growing attacks on the Federal government’s ability to tackle climate change\, cancel student debt\, protect workers\, and regulate corporate power. Each of these decisions reflects the channeling of right-wing ideology through the courts in ways that override not just majority views but also the very notion of democratic self-government. But what is to be done about the courts?\n\nFor the first time in almost a century\, the question of court reform is being taken seriously in mainstream circles. But the conversation to date has focused narrowly on questions of personnel changes and the possibility of adding additional justices to the court. However these discussions do not engage the broader question of the proper role of the judiciary in American democracy\, and the wider range of possible tools for institutional change And so over six sessions this reading group will address disempowering the courts: how to understand the problem\, historical and international perspectives on disempowerment reform efforts\, the strengths and weaknesses of the tools available to us\, as well as what building up a political movement around disempowering the courts might look like.\n\nJoin PPP and LPE to hear from amazing speakers and join lawyers and law students from around the country as we work through strategies for disempowering the courts and organizing for change.\nRegister now. \nThe Schedule:  \nJan 30 – The Problem of the Court \nFeb 20 – History of Reform Efforts (1865–2022) \nMar 19 – International Comparative Perspective on the Courts \nApr 16 –  Tools to Disempower the Court (pt. DESCRIPTION:For the last two years\, blue slips have been used to slow down judicial nominations and confirmations. Even worse\, they’ve been used to ensure that many judicial vacancies have gone unfilled\, leaving millions of people without adequate access to justice. While Senators Schumer\, Durbin\, and other leaders have confirmed historic nominees\, Senate Republicans must not be allowed to weaponize blue slips to stop our progress. Senator Durbin has the power to reform or end the use of blue slips and ensure a functional\, equitable judicial nominations process. We need to show support for him to act. Following the release of PPP’s Building a Better Bench report\, the conversation will take a timely look into what needs to continue and change in the next two years to meaningfully reshape our judiciary to be more reflective of the legal profession and our society.\n\n\n\nSpeaker Biographies\n\nTristin Brown is the Policy & Program Director at People’s Parity Project. Prior to this role\, she was an Associate Counsel at the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs. She first joined the Committee as the Small\, Webber\, Spencer Litigation Fellow of the Georgetown Women’s Law & Public Policy Fellowship Program. Tristin graduated summa cum laude from Florida A&M University with a B.S. in Public Relations\, and earned her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center. At Georgetown\, she was the President of the Black Law Students Association\, a Public Interest Fellow\, Student Ambassador\, and Online Editor and Special Projects Chair of the Georgetown Journal of Law & Modern Critical Race Perspectives. She was also recognized as a Pro Bono Pledge Honoree and Dean’s Certificate recipient for her special and outstanding service to the Law Center community\, and elected by her peers to represent her class as a 2019 student commencement speaker. Additionally\, at Georgetown\, Tristin represented clients in the DC Superior Court as a student attorney in the Domestic Violence Clinic. She has held externships with the Political Law Group formerly of Perkins Coie LLP\, Advancement Project and the litigation division of the Federal Election Commission. In 2018\, she was selected as a Ms. JD Fellow. Prior to attending Georgetown\, Tristin worked as a staffer for former U.S. Congresswoman Gwen Graham and interned for U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand\, former U.S. Senator Bill Nelson\, and the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation. She teaches as an adjunct professor at Florida State University College of Law.\n\nKatie O’Connor is deputy chief counsel at Demand Justice\, an organization fighting for progressive change in our courts. Prior to joining Demand Justice\, Katie advanced progressive legal causes at the American Constitution Society\, Advancement Project\, and the ACLU Voting Rights Project. She received her J.D. from Georgia State University College of Law and her undergraduate degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology. She’s a Tennessee native\, D.C. resident\, scary movie enthusiast\, and unabashed cat lady.\n\nJennifer Hunter is a labor lawyer\, writer\, and consultant to unions and nonprofit organizations. She writes and consults on workers’ rights and civil rights law and policy\, as well as judicial nominations and the courts. Before she began writing and consulting full-time in 2021\, Jenny practiced labor law for 15 years\, first as an associate at Bredhoff & Kaiser in Washington DC\, and then in the Legal Department of the Service Employees International Union for 11 years. In her last 3 years at SEIU\, she was the Lead Counsel for the Public Division. In this role she served as the legal point of contact for the dozens of SEIU local unions across the country that represent public employees and publicly-funded workers\, including state and local government employees\, higher education workers\, and family child care providers. She supported the work of SEIU organizing campaigns\, including by drafting legislation to recognize collective bargaining rights for tens of thousands of family child care providers in California. Jenny is originally from Grinnell\, Iowa. She attended Macalester College\, where she majored in Math\, and went to Yale Law School. She now lives in Washington\, DC with her husband and two children.\n\nTom Wright serves as the Associate Director of Strategic Engagement of ACS.  He helps manage ACS’s work concerning judicial nominations\, strengthening the ACS legal professional pipeline\, and ACS’s Path to the Bench Initiative. Tom was previously the law fellow at ACS. Prior to joining ACS\, Tom served as a staff attorney at the National Veterans Legal Services Program in Washington\, D.C. Tom received his J.D. from the University of Missouri School of Law in 2017\, and his B.A. in communication and political science from the University of Missouri in 2014. During his time at Mizzou\, he served as the president of the ACS student chapter and note and comment editor of the Missouri Law Review. In his free time\, Tom likes cheering for the Missouri Tigers\, watching TV and movies\, and visiting craft breweries.

This unexpected vacancy presents an opportunity to fill the seat with a true progressive champion\, to shift the balance of power on the Court of Appeals (the highest court in the state of New York)\, and to impact the administration of justice throughout the state. DESCRIPTION:Join us at 10:00 a.m. ET on March 12th for a training on how to write and place an effective op-ed. \nThere’s a lot going on when it comes to the American judiciary. In less than two weeks\, confirmation hearings for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson\, the first Black woman nominated to the Supreme Court\, will begin. It’s an incredible moment\, and it’s critical that we show the broad support for Judge Jackson. Unfortunately\, however\, we’re also just months away from the end of the Supreme Court’s term\, and the urgency of court reform has never been more clear. On top of that\, we have state courts that too often go unscrutinized\, leading to low democratic engagement with their local judiciary\, even in cases when that judiciary is elected. \nWe know how critical it is that progressive law students and attorneys spread the word about these important issues. One of the most effective means of doing this is by writing op-eds; unfortunately\, writing and pitching op-eds is not something that law school equips you to do. That’s why we’re bringing together attorney and writer Madiba Dennie\, PPP organizer and co-author of a recent Teen Vogue opinion piece on the Court’s shadow docket Dan Wade\, and PPP’s Policy & Program Director (and experienced op-ed writer) Tristin Brown for a training on writing and placing effective op-eds\, open to law students and lawyers everywhere. \nFrom 10:00–11:00\, we’ll be holding a roundtable discussion\, so bring your questions! DESCRIPTION:Last week\, Justice Stephen Breyer announced he would retire from the Supreme Court\, giving President Biden an opportunity to fulfill his campaign pledge to nominate the first Black woman to the Supreme Court. While the president reiterated that pledge last week\, we know that our work is only just beginning.\n\nWe need to ensure that the nominee is a true progressive champion — and we need to get her confirmed. We need to continue the push for Supreme Court expansion\, so that our new justice doesn’t spend the rest of her career writing dissenting opinions on a Supreme Court stolen by the Federalist Society. We need to keep our focus on the state courts\, lower federal courts\, and all of the venues in which people seek justice. And we need to continue to grow the movement dedicated to unrigging the law and building a legal system that works for people\, not corporate profits.\n\nIt’s a lot to do\, which is why we need all hands on deck. DESCRIPTION:What a week. Watching the culmination of nearly half a century’s work to overturn Roe has been incredibly painful — and knowing that progressives have let it happen? Absolutely infuriating. If you’re like us\, you’ve spent much of the last few days thinking about the many failures that got us here (and probably screaming with rage a non-negligible number of times). But since we can’t change the past\, I want to talk about what comes next.\n\nHere’s what we know: we’re not going to litigate our way out of this situation. Sitting around throwing our hands up won’t get us anywhere either. It’s going to take deep\, hard organizing work — a true movement dedicated to real justice\, within and outside of our legal system. We’ve seen the power this work can have (see\, e.g.\, the Federalist Society’s 6–3 majority on the Supreme Court). And fortunately\, we have a community that’s capable of doing the work. It’s just a matter of if we have the will.\n\nFor the law students in our community\, you’re invited to a Study Break + Dobbs Debrief on Monday\, December 6\, at 7:00 PM ET/4:00 PM PT.
