DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, July 11th\, Chief Judge Janet DiFiore of the New York Court of Appeals announced her intent to step down from the role at the end of August. This unexpected vacancy presents an opportunity to fill the seat with a true progressive champion\, to shift the balance of power on the Court of Appeals (the highest court in the state of New York)\, and to impact the administration of justice throughout the state. None of this will happen\, however\, if we don’t organize for it. Powerful forces are already working to keep the seat in the hands of a pro-corporate\, anti-people judge\, and we need to move quickly if we intend to successfully counter that.\n\nIn order to get this organizing underway\, PPP is convening an organizing call on Monday\, July 18th\, for progressive lawyers and law students throughout New York. Mystal was executive editor of Above the Law\, a website with around 2\,000\,000 unique visitors that focuses on law\, courts\, and justice. He’s known for writing about the law and politics\, breaking down Supreme Court decisions and up to the minute coverage of Supreme Court confirmation battles. \nOff the page\, Mystal is a legal contributor to the More Perfect podcast\, a Radiolab spinoff\, on WNYC. He’s appeared regularly on MSNBC since 2018\, appearing on All In With Chris Hayes\, The Beat With Ari Melber\, A.M. Joy with Joy Reid and Up with David Gura. Join us for our book club! For our first book\, we will be reading Allow Me to Retort: A Black Guy’s Guide to the Constitution by this year’s PPP Convening keynote speaker\, Elie Mystal. Join us for great discussion and camaraderie with others who are ready to unf*ck the law.\n\nFrom the publisher:\nAllow Me to Retort is an easily digestible argument about what rights we have\, what rights Republicans are trying to take away\, and how to stop them. Mystal explains how to protect the rights of women and people of color instead of cowering to the absolutism of gun owners and bigots. He explains the legal way to stop everything from police brutality to political gerrymandering\, just by changing a few judges and justices. He strips out all of the fancy jargon conservatives like to hide behind and lays bare the truth of their project to keep America forever tethered to its slaveholding past. \nMystal brings his trademark humor\, expertise\, and rhetorical flair to explain concepts like substantive due process and the right for the LGBTQ community to buy a cake\, and to arm readers with the knowledge to defend themselves against conservatives who want everybody to live under the yoke of eighteenth-century white men. The same tactics Mystal uses to defend the idea of a fair and equal society on MSNBC and CNN are in this book\, for anybody who wants to deploy them on social media. \nYou don’t need to be a legal scholar to understand your own rights. You don’t need to accept the “whites only” theory of equality pushed by conservative judges. SUMMARY:Pitch Perfect: PPP Op-Ed Training
DESCRIPTION:Join us at 10:00 a.m. ET on March 12th for a training on how to write and place an effective op-ed. \nThere’s a lot going on when it comes to the American judiciary. In less than two weeks\, confirmation hearings for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson\, the first Black woman nominated to the Supreme Court\, will begin. It’s an incredible moment\, and it’s critical that we show the broad support for Judge Jackson. Unfortunately\, however\, we’re also just months away from the end of the Supreme Court’s term\, and the urgency of court reform has never been more clear. On top of that\, we have state courts that too often go unscrutinized\, leading to low democratic engagement with their local judiciary\, even in cases when that judiciary is elected. \nWe know how critical it is that progressive law students and attorneys spread the word about these important issues. One of the most effective means of doing this is by writing op-eds; unfortunately\, writing and pitching op-eds is not something that law school equips you to do. That’s why we’re bringing together attorney and writer Madiba Dennie\, PPP organizer and co-author of a recent Teen Vogue opinion piece on the Court’s shadow docket Dan Wade\, and PPP’s Policy & Program Director (and experienced op-ed writer) Tristin Brown for a training on writing and placing effective op-eds\, open to law students and lawyers everywhere. \nFrom 10:00–11:00\, we’ll be holding a roundtable discussion\, so bring your questions! SUMMARY:Supreme Court Organizing Call
DESCRIPTION:Last week\, Justice Stephen Breyer announced he would retire from the Supreme Court\, giving President Biden an opportunity to fulfill his campaign pledge to nominate the first Black woman to the Supreme Court. While the president reiterated that pledge last week\, we know that our work is only just beginning.\n\nWe need to ensure that the nominee is a true progressive champion — and we need to get her confirmed. We need to continue the push for Supreme Court expansion\, so that our new justice doesn’t spend the rest of her career writing dissenting opinions on a Supreme Court stolen by the Federalist Society. We need to keep our focus on the state courts\, lower federal courts\, and all of the venues in which people seek justice. DESCRIPTION:What a week. Watching the culmination of nearly half a century’s work to overturn Roe has been incredibly painful — and knowing that progressives have let it happen? Absolutely infuriating. If you’re like us\, you’ve spent much of the last few days thinking about the many failures that got us here (and probably screaming with rage a non-negligible number of times). But since we can’t change the past\, I want to talk about what comes next.\n\nHere’s what we know: we’re not going to litigate our way out of this situation. Sitting around throwing our hands up won’t get us anywhere either. It’s going to take deep\, hard organizing work — a true movement dedicated to real justice\, within and outside of our legal system. We’ve seen the power this work can have (see\, e.g.\, the Federalist Society’s 6–3 majority on the Supreme Court). And fortunately\, we have a community that’s capable of doing the work. It’s just a matter of if we have the will.\n\nFor the law students in our community\, you’re invited to a Study Break + Dobbs Debrief on Monday\, December 6\, at 7:00 PM ET/4:00 PM PT. We’ll have an open Zoom room and a community of folks to process the events of this week with (and to share in the anger that none of your professors bothered to acknowledge what was happening at the Court).
