SUMMARY:Register Now: 2024 Convening
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, law students\, attorneys\, and legal advocates from around the country are joining together to unf*ck the law. From June 28–30\, 2024\, People’s Parity Project (PPP) will convene our progressive community for three days of policy deep dives\, skills trainings\, and networking sessions — all dedicated to growing the movement of legal professionals committed to unrigging the law and building a legal system that values people over corporate profits. We’re delighted to be joined by Aziz Rana as our keynote speaker and other speakers and panelists who will be covering everything from making the administrative state work for working people to the Supreme Court’s decades-long power grab to how to advance justice in state courts. \nJoin us on Friday\, June 28th through Sunday\, June 30th at the Dupont Circle Hotel in Washington\, DC (located at 1500 New Hampshire Ave NW). \nThe Convening is an opportunity for progressive law students\, attorneys\, and advocates to join in our mission to build a better legal system. PPP has three main goals through the event: \n\nTo build community among progressive law students\, attorneys\, and advocates;\nTo provide students and attorneys with concrete skills needed to advocate for change within the legal system\, both in law school and beyond; and\nTo grow the number of students and attorneys committed to PPP’s core issues\, including court reform\, state court advocacy\, and building worker power.\n\n\nHolding an event on this scale is an expensive undertaking. Including the cost of securing rental space\, providing food\, inviting speakers\, covering travel sponsorships for a subset of law student organizers\, and other miscellaneous expenses\, we expect to spend $500 per attendee. Sponsorships help us cover some of this cost and we rely on ticket sales to cover a portion of the event expenses; however\, we don’t want cost to be a barrier for anybody interested in joining the movement to unf*ck the law. \nTicket prices are thus only suggestions; if you are interested in attending\, but cannot afford the suggested amount\, please email hello@peoplesparity.org to secure a discounted or free ticket. \n\nPurchase Your Ticket Here \n**This schedule will be updated throughout the spring. \nFriday\n5:00 Registration opens \n6:00 Welcome reception \n8:00 Dinner and keynote address \n  \nSaturday\n8:00 Registration/coffee \n9:00–5:00 Panel discussions\, speakers\, networking\, and community-building time \n  \nSunday\n8:00 Registration/coffee \n9:30 Campaign workshop \n11:00 Organizers’ Assembly meeting \n12:30 Closing \nKeynote Speakers\n \nAziz Rana is a Professor and Provost’s Distinguished Fellow at Boston College Law School and the incoming J. Donald Monan\, S.J.\, University Professor of Law and Government (beginning 2024). He joins Boston College from Cornell Law School\, where he was the Richard and Lois Cole Professor of Law. \nHis research and teaching center on American constitutional law and political development. In particular\, Rana’s work focuses on how shifting notions of race\, citizenship\, and empire have shaped legal and political identity since the founding of the country. \nHis first book\, The Two Faces of American Freedom (Harvard University Press) situates the American experience within the global history of colonialism\, examining the intertwined relationship in American constitutional practice between internal accounts of freedom and external projects of power and expansion. His forthcoming book\, The Constitutional Bind: How Americans Came to Idolize a Document that Fails Them (University of Chicago Press\, 2024)\, explores the modern emergence of constitutional veneration in the twentieth century — especially against the backdrop of growing American global authority — and how veneration has influenced the boundaries of popular politics. \nRana has written essays and op-eds for such venues as n+1\, Dissent\, The Boston Review\, The Washington Post\, The New York Times\,  New Labor Forum\, Jacobin\, The Guardian\, The Chronicle of Higher Education\, The Nation\, Jadaliyya\, Salon\, and The Law and Political Economy Blog. He has articles and chapter contributions published or forthcoming with Yale and Oxford University Presses\, The University of Chicago Law Review\, California Law Review\, UCLA Law Review\, Texas Law Review\, and the Yale Law Journal Forum\, among others. \nRana is an editorial board member of Dissent\, The Law and Political Economy Blog\, and Just Security. He is also a Life Member of the Council of Foreign Relations and a Non-Resident Fellow at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft.  \nHe received his A.B. from Harvard College summa cum laude and his J.D. from Yale Law School. He earned a Ph.D. in political science at Harvard University\, where his dissertation was awarded the University’s Charles Sumner Prize. \nFor more information or to sponsor the Convening\, please email Molly Coleman at molly@peoplesparity.org. \n  \nHotel accommodations can be found at the Dupont Circle Hotel. \nTo inquire about booking a room at the set PPP rate\, please contact Steve Kennedy at steve@peoplesparity.org by 6/7. \nAttendees are\, of course\, not required to stay at the event hotel. \nRegister for the event \nThis summer\, law students\, attorneys\, and legal advocates from around the country are joining together to unf*ck the law. SUMMARY:Pro-People Lawyering Series: Fighting Homelessness After Grants Pass
DESCRIPTION:In Grants Pass v. Johnson\, the US Supreme Court held that ordinances allowing for fines\, destruction of property\, and imprisonment for sleeping outside\, even when no shelter is available\, are not unconstitutional. Join PPP and the National Homelessness Center for a discussion on the impact of Grants Pass and steps that lawyers and law students can take to fight for the right of all people to live lives with dignity. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister here: https://actionnetwork.org/events/0e4e453e1e115acbdc9143816585558d/ \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nPPP is proud to present our Pro-People Lawyering Series\, which will provide ongoing discussions of the many ways that lawyers and law students can support and integrate themselves with social movements and other efforts to improve the lives of marginalized people. Each discussion will feature practitioners working on a specific issue such as workers’ rights\, racial justice\, homelessness\, reproductive rights\, and more.

SUMMARY:Gangsters of the Status Quo: How Law School and the Legal Profession Turn Lawyers into Mercenaries
DESCRIPTION:The majority of students go to law school to make positive change for the people of our country\, but only a small minority end up in actual pro-people positions that advance the interests of working people. What are the structural issues in law schools and the legal profession that bring about this outcome? How does our current approach to the law and judiciary entrench existing power and keep ordinary people down? How can we work together to address these issues and move past the corporatist\, mercenary-like values so often inculcated in members of the bar? \n\n\n\nJoin us for a conversation on systemic injustices in the legal system and how legal culture works to remove values and morality from public policy–and how we can work together to build something better. \n\n\n\nThe event will take place at 8 pm ET / 5 pm PT on Thursday\, March 20th. Have questions? Reach out to our Organizing and Network Director\, Steve Kennedy\, at steve@peoplesparity.org. We hope to see you there! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister here

SUMMARY:People’s Parity Project 2025 Convening
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, law students\, attorneys\, and legal advocates from around the country are joining together to unf*ck the law. From June 27–29\, 2025\, People’s Parity Project (PPP) will convene our progressive community for three days of policy deep dives\, skills trainings\, and networking sessions — all dedicated to growing the movement of legal professionals committed to unrigging the law and building a legal system that values people over corporate profits.  \n\n\n\nJoin us on Friday\, June 27th through Sunday\, June 29th at the Phoenix Park Hotel in Washington\, DC (located at 520 North Capitol St NW). \n\n\n\nThe Convening is an opportunity for progressive law students\, attorneys\, and advocates to join in our mission to build a better legal system. PPP has three main goals through the event: \n\n\n\n\nTo build community among progressive law students\, attorneys\, and advocates;\n\n\n\nTo provide students and attorneys with concrete skills needed to advocate for change within the legal system\, both in law school and beyond; and\n\n\n\nTo grow the number of students and attorneys committed to PPP’s core issues\, including court reform\, state court advocacy\, and building worker power.\n\n\n\n\nHolding an event on this scale is an expensive undertaking. \n\n\n\nTicket prices are thus only suggestions; if you are interested in attending\, but cannot afford the suggested amount\, please email hello@peoplesparity.org to secure a discounted or free ticket. \n\n\n\n\nPURCHASE YOUR TICKET HERE

SUMMARY:Lawyers March for Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Lawyers March for Democracy \n\n\n\nAs the Supreme Court wraps up its November oral arguments\, join fellow attorneys\, law students\, and legal advocates for a powerful rally outside the Supreme Court to declare what should be obvious: No one is above the law–not even the president. Join organizations like PPP\, indivisible\, AFJ\, ACS\, Project South\, Lambda Legal\, Democracy Forward\, United for Democracy\, and more as we call out the Trump administration’s lawlessness and the Supreme Court’s complicity in Trump’s authoritarianism. \n\n\n\nThis gathering of legal professionals will spotlight what we are trained to uphold: the Constitution\, the rule of law\, and equal justice. Donald Trump’s ongoing defiance of legal norms–from inciting insurrection to openly attacking judges to shredding the Constitution in pursuit of his ends–has not only undermined democracy\, but exposed a troubling willingness by the highest court in the land to look the other way. Through all of the upheavals of the early months of Trump’s second term\, the Supreme Court has not only been complicit but has actively participated in Trump’s authoritarian project\, siding with the administration over and over again and allowing him to continue blatantly unconstitutional actions without any public legal justification. \n\n\n\nAs the broader public rises up to reject authoritarianism\, this rally adds a critical voice: the lawyers\, jurists\, and law students whose daily work depends on the rule of law functioning–and who now find themselves compelled to protest its erosion. \n\n\n\nWe will not stand silent as the Supreme Court enables a slide into lawlessness. We will not normalize the abandonment of constitutional limits. We are gathering to say loudly and clearly that we will not stand aside as the Court enables Trump’s authoritarianism. This is a multiracial democracy that should be bound by universal principles of equality under the law and equal opportunity to the riches that this country has to offer. \n\n\n\nWhether you’re barred\, in school\, retired\, or simply committed to justice\, come stand with us and show that the legal community is watching—and taking action. Bring your signs\, your colleagues\, and your voices. \n\n\n\nLawyers March for Democracy organizational partners include People’s Parity Project\, indivisible\, Alliance for Justice\, American Constitution Society\, Lambda Legal\, Project South\, Women Lawyers on Guard\, and the Virginia Poverty Law Center.
