Washington, D.C.-Attorneys, law students, and legal advocates gathered on Saturday for a powerful rally outside the U.S. Supreme Court to declare what should be obvious: No one is above the law–not even the president. Amid the Administration’s ongoing attacks on the U.S. Constitution and the Supreme Court’s active participation in furthering authoritarianism, legal professionals are building a movement to defend the Constitution, the rule of law, and equal justice.
“The biggest threat to the rule of law today is that some of our most powerful institutions, large corporations, the media, universities, and major law firms, are allowing themselves to be extorted rather than banding together and standing up to the lawlessness from the Trump administration,” said Justice Thomas Moukawsher, former judge of the Connecticut Superior Court. “The legal community has a responsibility to point it out and then stamp it out, in courtrooms, in bar associations, and by exercising our First Amendment rights to peacefully protest in the streets.”
As Democratic leadership and eight Senate Democrats face outrage over their shutdown surrender, legal professionals and defenders of democracy gathered to call on those who have taken an oath to the Constitution to have the courage to stand up for democracy.
“Clearly unlawful actions by this administration are being rubber-stamped for approval by our highest court; that is simply not justice under law,” said Rachel Rossi, president of Alliance for Justice. “Our country was founded to be a people-led government where no one is above the law, and we will not rest until that vision is fulfilled.”
“Trump and Vance want to build a country where the rule of law doesn’t matter if it threatens their power. You can throw a dart at a world map and hit a country like that. America is special because it isn’t one of those places,” said Aman George, Senior Counsel at Democracy Forward. “Kids in America don’t grow up wishing to build a better life in some dictatorship thousands of miles away. We want to live in a country where Mr. Smith goes to Washington, not falls out of a window in Moscow.”
“Today is not just a march; we are kicking off a sustained, national mobilization of legal professionals willing to confront democratic backsliding head-on,” Steve Kennedy, Organizing Director of People’s Parity Project. “The stakes could not be higher. If the courts are to remain a safeguard for all rather than a weapon for a despotic president, those who work within them must be willing to defend their independence—not just in briefs and law reviews, but out in the streets as well, where they will be visible to all.”
The Lawyers March for Democracy adds a critical legal voice to the growing movement to reject authoritarianism. Convened by the legal justice organization, the People’s Parity Project, The Lawyers March for Democracy is a growing coalition of dozens of legal and advocacy organizations, including the American Constitution Society, Alliance for Justice, ACLU, Lawyers for Good Government, Project South, Indivisible, Women Lawyers on Guard, Democracy Forward, Poverty Law Center of Virginia, United for Democracy, Law Students for Climate Accountability, Lambda Legal and more.
