The letter, sent on December 4th, follows months of activism by law students. Student have called on Congress to reject corporate immunity because it would make it impossible to hold universities and other corporations accountable if they refuse to take reasonable steps to ensure the safety of students and workers — potentially leading to a surge of the virus and forcing schools to shut down again. Students have also emphasized that this is a racial justice issue: on many campuses, school staff are predominantly Black and Brown workers who are bearing the brunt of the COVID-19 crisis, and who
would be at extreme risk if campuses re-open without reasonable safety measures in place.
