PPP on SCOTUS Birthright Citizenship Decision

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 27 2025

Today marks a new low for the future of our democracy. By ruling in favor of the Trump Administration to invalidate the power of nationwide injunctions, the Supreme Court has not only set the stage to deny millions of Americans their constitutional right to citizenship, it has also removed one of the few remaining checks we have on authoritarianism.

This decision should come as no surprise given the Court’s repeated refusal to check the Trump administration’s policies that trample on the rights of Black and Brown communities. However, it is vital that we continue to decry the harm it will inflict on countless families and on the future of our Constitution.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s dissent from the bench is a chilling warning of the implications of this appalling decision: “The rule of law is not a given in this Nation, nor any other. It is a precept of our democracy that will endure only if those brave enough in every branch fight for its survival. Today, the Court abdicates its vital role in that effort.”
